Preaching With A Clear Conscience

Two mourners returned from a funeral services remarking how they had been strangely reassured about death. The words of the preachers obviously soothing their fears. One recalled how the preacher spoke favourably about entry into heaven. The other spoke of heart shaped beds and earthly comforts which were available to all.

Tragically the person being buried was evidently not saved and far from experiencing the delights of heaven was probally enduring the torments of Hell. The funeral service traditionally a timely moment to warn the largely unrepentant congregation of the reality of future punishment, has been turned into a service of hypocrisy and lies in the sight of God. False comfort is given and promises made that God Himself has never made, or will uphold.

Ezekiel was warned by God “When I say to the wicked, O wicked man you shall surely die; if you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at your hand” 33:8.

John Knox the famous Scottish preacher said of his profession: “We inter the body decently, but our primary. concern is the soul. Since the departed person’s salvation is determined by their faith in the salvation wrought by God through Christ, we must attend to those who mourn . After death comes the great day of reckoning, and it is therefore the minister’s duty to preach about the certainty of coming judgement for those who do not repent and put their faith in Christ.”
